Union Christian College Kerala

Union Christian College Or UC college, with the motto, “truth shall make you free” is one of the prestigious institution in Kerala, which was established in the year 1921 and was first under the Madras University, then under the Travancore University and now affiliated to MG university, Kottayam, Kerala. This is an inter-denominational cooperation venture among the four major christian denominations- Jacobite Syrian Church, Church of South India, Malankara Marthoma Syrian Church and Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. This college has been provided with ‘A’ grade by NAAC and is situated in Aluva, near the banks of river Periyar on the way to Paravoor. Famous for its ambience, serenity and heritage, the college provides the maximum number of courses than any other under MG University. Some novel course like BT and SP adds on to it. Many of the notable personalities like Philipose Mar Chrysostam valya Metropolitan, malayalam actor Dileep and director Lijo Jose Pellissery etc had been a part of this college long back. And today the college is one of the favorite spot for movie shootings in Kerala. People who visit it once could not resist from falling in love with its uniqueness and simplicity.

The college is actually not a solitary building but a number of small blocks in hectors of land. Each block has a minimum of two different departments. Most of the departments have got their own research centres, which add to it’s educational value. The famous Kacheri Malika, Mahaganitham are the first to grab our attention, as we enter the college premises. The kachery Malika was actually the Zila court of Travancore state in the 19th Century. In 1993, this building was declared by the Government of India as a protected monument. Not only that, there is a small museum under the Archeological Department of kerala with some unique and precious items which denotes the heritage of the state. Some of them had been found while excavating for the new building premises. It’s simplicity is actually the most attractive factor. The college has got a beautiful history, there was a time when the college authorities had no money to pay the teachers, so the teachers were actually paying to the college for its functioning, and likewise, the huge campus was built as a result of the love and dedication of some of the eminent professors. And today each of the blocks in the campus has been named after them. Not only the atmosphere, but even the college students and teachers are noble yet with modern beliefs.

This college has got the best library with enormous number of books from various era. Talking about UC, how can someone forget about the very beloved CC and BBC, which are the favorite spot for the students to hangout and even for the lovers for some pretty talks. Each corner of the college has got a story of its own with its own unique trees which blossoms at different seasons. In some areas it is the month of December, while in other, it will be July. The famous farewell tree is one among them which usually blossom at the time of farewell. It’s believed that the tree was brought by one of the ex-teachers somewhere from outside India. Not only that there are many other trees been planted which were brought from different parts of the world and that’s what makes it more distinct. Another main attraction is the mango tree planted by Mahatma Gandhi during his visit to Kerala which is now highlighted before the administrative block.

The whole campus tour would take you more than a day, so big is the area. Two of the sports hostels both for girls and boys have been in the campus premises only. There are even quarters for the teachers inside the campus. The principal of the college has also got a special quarter near the Administrative block. Let it be the college canteen or the VMH, where almost all the events have been hosted, or the parking slots, UC does spread a unique aura among the students. The college will complete it’s 100th year in 2021, still stands so young and vibrant making everyone fall in love even at the first sight.
